Living on Key Biscayne is like being on vacation every day. South of Miami Beach, homes on the 7 by 2-mile barrier island are accessed via the Rickenbacker Causeway and Virginia Key, where Miami Seaquarium is located, and windsurfers coast all week. 

 

Once home, residents of Key Biscayne real estate feel the big-city bustle melt away. Incorporated as a village in the early ’90s, Key Biscayne offers all the urban amenities from a public library to grocery stores to fine dining while maintaining its old-fashioned, small-town charm. An active person’s paradise, it claims Crandon Park’s picnic-inviting beach, 18-hole championship golf course, and tennis center, where the Sony Ericsson Open occurs in March; Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park’s stunning beach, bike trails, and picturesque lighthouse, and the Key Biscayne Yacht Club, where members sail and socialize. 

 

Developed after World War II with the aid of the GI Bill, the island’s original, modest bungalows with terrazzo floors have nearly given way to new construction of larger contemporary homes, bayfront compounds, and a blaze of beachfront condominium towers. An excellent primary education is available through numerous Montessori programs and preschools, as well as a K-8 school. Other than enrolling at MAST Academy, one of the city’s premier magnet schools, students usually attend high school on the mainland.
